Registration is coming! Jan. 31st – 8am – ONLINE

January 25, 2010

Registration is 6 days away! Get excited!

Here is some important information/ changes that were made over the weekend.

    • Registration is online. The link will be posted at www.bu.edu/csc. The link can also be found at http://www.bu.edu/csc/programs/asb/index.html. It should appear by the end of this week in collaboration with the launch of the new CSC website, although it will not become ‘active’ until 8am on the 31st .
    • There will be NO QUESTIONS on the online registration system. Instead, you will be sent a PDF after your trip is confirmed with questions you need to answer. The sheet and the remainder of the payment will be due by February 12th, 4pm to the CSC.
    • You can register 1 friend to go on the same trip with you! There will be a section where you can add an additional BU ID and name. Your friend will not need to register independently.
    • The price of each trip has increased slightly due to the unexpected rise in cost of vans. Non-flying trips are $325 and flying trips are $675. We apologize for any inconvenience and the late notification.
    • A non-refundable deposit of $150 is due upon registration. All participants in our flying trips are required to pay this deposit, regardless of scholarship application. If you register a friend, you will need to pay the $150 deposit for them too.
    • If you register a friend, either you both apply for a scholarship or neither apply for a scholarship. If you want to apply for a scholarship and your friend does not, you should each register separately.
    • We have a limited number of scholarships available. They will be given based on your financial need as determined by the University. Due to the limited funds we will not be able to give any one volunteer more than a $200 award. Scholarship letters are due to the CSC by 4pm, February 1st.

If you have any questions or concerns please email altbreak@bu.edu

There’s No Place Like Home for the Holidays

All of us from ASB want to wish everyone a great intercession and holiday season!

See you when we get back!

      Get Ready for the Showdown

      December 20, 2009

      Team 5 in Full Motion

Hope everyone survived finals week! (If you still have a final, good luck!)

To take a break from studying, ASB played laser tag in the GSU Alley.

We hid behind colorful mats, pushed each other in a blue bin and kicked garbage cans. We did not settle until our opponents saw the bright (neon) light at the end of the tunnel.

After many rounds of play between the eight teams, Team 5: Team Kevin (AKA The large Flightless tropical bird) won! Although Team 5’s rounds of play were epic, the most memorable round was PM vs. PM. Ari and Z battled to death. Ari took the crown as the Laser Tag PM Queen.

Check out the photos on our Facebook page.

Look out for many more ASB events!

We Got a Real Jam Goin’ Down

      December 9, 2009

ASB supports BU Basketball. After gathering 50 ASB lovers, the ASB team cheered on the Terriers at the BU vs. Bucknell game on Sunday, December 6, 2009.

BU took a victory over Bucknell with a score of 63-53. GO TERRIERS! The ASB team took a victory in fundraising by showing their support for the Terriers.

The next time the full ASB team will be at Agganis, they will be holding mops and plastic bags. They will clean up Agganis after the hockey game on January 29th.

      That’s Money, Honey

      December 7, 2009

We created a payment plan this year to allow students who may not be able to come up with the trip fee within 2 weeks after registration. The trip fee will need to be completely paid prior to the end of the Spring 2010 Semester.

In order to be eligible for the payment plan, students will need to initially apply for a scholarship. Students who receive or do not receive a scholarship can utilize the payment plan. We will evaluate each student’s situation individually. We will notify the student regarding their payment plan option at the same time they receive notification regarding their scholarship.

For example: If a student receives a scholarship of $100, their remaining balance will be $200. Their individual payment plan may be $30 dollars per week, starting with the second week in February, until their balance is paid off.  (Each payment plan can vary in amount and length.)

      * All flying trips will be required to put down a $150 deposit upon registration – students will still be able to apply for a scholarship, but due to the cost of flying trips, the $150 deposit is required on January 31st *

Email altbreak@bu.edu if you have any further questions.

      Party in the ASB

      December 3, 2009

Legos, mud pies and gingerbread houses, oh my! The ASB Block Party brought all that and more to the BU community.

Through an interactive experience, BU student learned about the nine issue areas: disabilities, children, human rights, GLBT, animal rescue, environment, housing, hunger and HIV/AIDS awareness. Searching for words, grabbing free condoms and building a puzzle brought everyone closer to the service.

The coordinators revved up their excitement by relaying their trips’ details to the BU students. Everyone definitely cannot wait for registration on January 31, 2010 at 8:00am.

The block party was sponsored by HP. HP displayed the Pavilion Artist Edition 2 and DM3 (with Windows 7). Students stopped by to check out the computers and received an environmental tote bag. The HP Brand Ambassador, Dan Chizzoniti, explained the different features of the cool computers.

Call on Me, Call on Me

      December 1, 2009

This year, we have a new addition to the ASB family: five committee chairs.

Each committee chair specializes in one aspect of ASB: transportation, public relations & advertising, registration & databases, fundraising and social events. The committees also consist of trip coordinators who help implement the committees’ tasks.

The five committee chairs are Quincy Wright (fundraising), Marshall Gillette (transportation), Alisha Cooper (registration & databases), Adam Khalid (social events) and Dan Chizzoniti (public relations & advertising).

You can learn more about them under “The Committee Chairs” tab.

All of the Boys and All of the Girls

      November 26, 2009

We all know the ASB trips are amazing, but who leads the trips? The 70 awesome coordinators, of course.

      Cumberland 09 with a few 2010 Coordinators

Did you know Corey (Natchez, MS) wears Crocs? Moneil’s (Omaha, NE) birthday is during ASB? Giang (Detroit, MI) has an obsession with stilettos? Mac (Harper’s Ferry, WV) is afraid of heights? Ksenia (Detroit, MI) has a giant inflatable rhino in her room?

You can find information about all the coordinators in the “2010 Trip Blogs” tab. Each trip will blog every week to keep everyone update with information about the trip. You will learn a lot about the coordinators in the process.

Check back every week for the updates!

      That Future Boom, Boom, Boom

      November 20, 2009

Grab your friends, your sleeping bag, and some food to get ready to camp out for ASB registration…in front of your computer?

For the first time, ASB registration will occur ONLINE. You may have the comfort of sleeping in your own bed, but you need to make sure you set your alarm for the right time. Registration will occur on January 31, 2010 at 8:00am.

Registration will work similarly to class registration except everyone will have access to the registration page at the same time. Make sure you have your trips ranked beforehand! Reading about the 35 trips under the “2010 Trip Blogs” tab will help you make your decisions.

More details about registration to follow in the coming weeks.
